Albuquerque Journal - In Debate, Udall Pushes More of the Same

Tonight's final televised debate between the candidates for U.S. Senate showed clear differences with Rep. Tom Udall refusing to own up to his record in Congress and Congressman Steve Pearce standing up proudly for his values and principles. The debate featured Udall attempting to rewrite history on issues ranging from the economy and energy to Los Alamos National Labs and Iraq.

"It's almost like he believes he wasn't there voting to cut $400 million from LANL and voting to cut the funding for our troops in harm's way, " said Pearce, a former small businessman and Vietnam veteran. "In Congress, you vote what you believe, you vote your values. I respect Tom's vote against drilling, against LANL and against gun rights - I just don't agree with them. But when you start changing facts, then the people of New Mexico are not well served."

"People are tired of the same old politicians saying one thing and doing another. Voters can handle the truth if you just tell them your values and beliefs and then vote that way," he added. "What they will reject are those like Tom who are running away from their record for purely political reasons."

The debate was sponsored by KOAT-TV and the Albuquerque Journal.
